Boken är en essäsamling, dessa är sorterade på sju olika teman, essäerna är alla skriva av Thomas Daniell från Nya Zeeland, som är en verksam arkitekt boende i Kyoto. Nästan alla essäer har funnits tidigare i olika tidskrifter men samligen av dessa och de korta introduktionerna till varje kapitel målar upp bild av tillståndet hos arkitekturen i Japan en aning bortom den vanliga bilden. Den knyter samman trådar och skapar sammanhang.
